Welcome to Ledger.com/Start® – Your Official Setup Guide
Ledger® provides a secure way to manage your cryptocurrency through industry-leading hardware wallets. By using a Ledger Nano S®, Nano S Plus®, or Nano X®, your private keys stay offline, protected from online threats and hacks. This page is your official starting point to safely set up and begin using your Ledger device.
Step 1: Unboxing Your Ledger® Device
Inside your Ledger® box, you should find:
- Ledger® hardware wallet (Nano S, Nano S Plus, or Nano X)
- USB cable (or USB-C, depending on model)
- Recovery phrase sheets
- Quick start guide and instructions
Check the box for any signs of tampering. Ledger devices come sealed and are never shipped with pre-installed PINs or recovery phrases.
Step 2: Visit Ledger.com/Start®
Use your internet browser to go to the official onboarding page by typing Ledger.com/Start® into the address bar. This is the only verified site to begin the secure setup process. Avoid using search engines or third-party websites, as some may lead to phishing attempts or fake apps.
Step 3: Download Ledger Live®
Ledger Live® is the official desktop and mobile app that connects to your hardware wallet. It lets you manage your crypto assets, track balances, send and receive funds, and install applications for various blockchains.
Ledger Live® is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Download the version suited for your device from the official source via the setup guide on Ledger.com/Start®.
Step 4: Set Up Your Ledger® Wallet
Connect your device using the provided USB cable or Bluetooth (Nano X® only). Once connected, the device will guide you through choosing a PIN code and writing down your 24-word recovery phrase.
- Choose a strong PIN code. This protects your device locally.
- Carefully write down the 24-word recovery phrase. This is your only backup.
- Store your recovery phrase securely and never share it with anyone.
Your recovery phrase gives full access to your crypto assets. Ledger will never ask for it. Never enter it on any computer, phone, or website.
Step 5: Install Cryptocurrency Apps
Using Ledger Live®, go to the “Manager” section and install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to store. Each crypto asset has its own app, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana.
Once installed, you can add accounts for each coin and start receiving or sending funds directly from your hardware wallet.
Step 6: Add Accounts and Receive Crypto
In Ledger Live®, navigate to “Accounts” and add a new account for your desired cryptocurrency. This allows you to view balances and transactions in real time.
To receive crypto:
- Select “Receive” in Ledger Live®
- Choose the appropriate account
- Verify the receiving address on your device screen
- Copy the address and use it to transfer funds from an exchange or wallet
Step 7: Sending Crypto Safely
To send crypto, select “Send” in Ledger Live®. Enter the recipient address, amount, and fees. Always verify transaction details on your Ledger® device screen before approving. This ensures that the transaction hasn’t been altered by malware.
Security Best Practices
- Only use Ledger Live® downloaded from the official source
- Always verify receiving addresses on the device itself
- Keep your recovery phrase offline and in a secure location
- Never share your 24-word phrase with anyone—not even with Ledger® support
- Enable password lock and device auto-lock for additional protection
